2021年,艺术家曹斐和乐队五条人在北京第一次见面。这像一场迟到多年的聚会。他们都成长和活跃于千禧年左右的珠三角,彼时飞车党横行,曹斐在日常生活中发展出一套可随时调用的身体智慧——三步一回头,利用反光镜实时观察身后状况;仁科至今不喜欢有人走在身后,这是他2004年在广州遭遇抢劫后的创伤记忆。他们也备受珠三角野乱中有序、多空隙结构的滋养。陈侗的博尔赫斯书店,法国的新小说,海量的打口碟……毗邻香港让珠三角成为某种文化和艺术的前沿,也让它形成了与北方政治中心截然不同的气候。曹斐用影像记录了珠三角的城市化进程:菜地变楼房,墓地变学校。她绕过北方中心,直接走向世界。而五条人则在城市里找猪,在石牌桥骑摩托车,他们放弃飘在空中的那些思想,而是关注飘在空中的塑料袋,和踩在脚下的人字拖。这两者后来成为五条人的象征,也很能代表珠三角的精神:自成体系、灵活变通、务实肯干,专注眼下,也期盼目之所及的明天。

他们的作品和经历彼此呼应与互文,最后交织于五条人巡回演唱会“大时代歌厅”。曹斐担任此次巡演的艺术导演。她将五条人歌中的意象实体化,搬上舞台。红色高跟鞋,工地脚手架,发廊霓虹灯,历史影像闯入当下经验,今日之声混杂往日回响。当他们在台上唱起“今日全球化,明日自己耍”时,仿佛一支来自过去的箭,射中今日之我们。但他们也唱:“嘿,我的朋友,明天的太阳依然为你而升起来。”
