Matter is an open-source standard for the smart home, created by over 200 companies including Apple, Google, and Samsung. It serves as a communication and interoperability protocol, allowing smart devices like lights, locks, and appliances to talk to each other locally and with smart home platforms like Apple Home, Google Home, and Home Assistant. The goal is to simplify, secure, and make the smart home more interoperable.
Matter is designed to eliminate the need for device manufacturers to develop individual partnerships with platforms like Apple HomeKit or Amazon Alexa. If a device works with Matter, it should be compatible with all major smart home platforms, making it easier for consumers to mix and match devices without worrying about compatibility issues.
Matter has faced challenges in terms of new product releases, especially in new categories like home energy management and appliances. Platform support for new device types has been slow and spotty, with ecosystems like Apple and Google not fully supporting all Matter-compatible devices. Interoperability between platforms has also been difficult, with some devices requiring manual setup across different ecosystems.
Matter aims to enable more ambitious smart home use cases, such as whole-home energy management, where devices like solar panels, HVAC systems, and smart appliances can work together to save energy and money. It also envisions more seamless automation, like having lights turn on when you say 'good morning' or adjusting the thermostat at night.
Matter receives a D for its performance in 2024. While it showed up and made some effort, it still has significant room for improvement. The lack of new devices, slow platform support, and interoperability issues have held it back from achieving its full potential.
Thread is a low-power, mesh networking protocol that Matter can use for smart home devices. However, it has been a source of frustration due to its complexity and the fact that multiple Thread networks can exist in a home, leading to connectivity issues. Sharing network keys between different ecosystems has been difficult, and Thread's rollout has been slow and problematic.
Matter benefits Home Assistant by allowing it to connect to more devices locally, especially those that previously relied on cloud connectivity. However, Matter's slow rollout of new device types and the complexity of Thread have created challenges. Home Assistant still serves as a powerful middleware to bridge devices, but Matter's full potential has yet to be realized.
Matter's key advantages include its ability to work over IP, meaning it can run on Wi-Fi, which most homes already have. It also allows devices to connect to multiple smart home hubs simultaneously, providing more flexibility and security. Additionally, Matter simplifies onboarding with QR codes, making it easier for users to set up devices.
Future applications of Matter could include whole-home energy management, where devices like solar panels, HVAC systems, and smart appliances work together to optimize energy usage. It could also enable more seamless automation, such as turning on lights based on motion or adjusting the thermostat at night. Matter's potential lies in making these complex systems more accessible to the average user.
Matter's role in energy management is significant because it allows devices like solar panels, home battery storage systems, and smart appliances to communicate and work together. This could lead to more efficient energy usage, cost savings, and better integration of renewable energy sources into the home.
Happy holidays! Before we disappear into family time and catching up on our favorite shows, we have one more episode for you. And it's 90 minutes of deep nerdery about the smart home. Every year, we try to dig into one standard or spec that has impacted our lives this year, and we couldn't think of anything more potentially great and occasionally infuriating than Matter. Matter is supposed to be the protocol that makes the smart home work — so, uh, how's that going? The Verge's Jennifer Pattison Tuohy joins to discuss the state of the smart home, before we play a game to see how well we understand things. Then, Home Assistant creator Paulus Schoutsen tells us what it's like to try and make Matter work, and where we might be headed next year.
