Noelle King: This podcast series will analyze seven swing states that could decide the 2024 US presidential election, starting with Georgia, which was a focal point of controversy in the 2020 election. Sam Greenglass: The 2020 Georgia election was very close, and the victory of Democratic candidate Joe Biden was significant, but it also sparked a strong backlash from Republicans and questions about the election results. Trump and his allies spread conspiracy theories, questioning the fairness of the election and attempting to interfere with the election results. In the following years, discussions about election integrity continued, and some Republicans still insisted on conspiracy theories about election fraud in 2020. The Georgia Republican legislature passed a series of new election laws to address concerns about election integrity, but these measures did not completely eliminate doubts. The Georgia State Election Board recently passed a series of rule changes that have sparked controversy. These changes involve the certification of election results and the counting of ballots, potentially leading local election boards to refuse to certify election results and potentially increasing errors in the ballot counting process. Hand-counting ballots is less reliable than machine counting and could lead to misinformation about election integrity. David Becker: US elections have always been very secure, but misinformation has led people to believe that elections have been compromised. The reality and public perception of the Georgia election differ. The certification of election results is a non-discretionary administrative act, and if candidates have objections to the election results, they can challenge them through legal channels. The Georgia State Election Board has no power to decide election results, and its actions could be used to spread misinformation. Georgia has taken several measures to ensure accurate ballot counting, including paper ballots and audits, and has mechanisms in place to deal with attempts to overturn election results. Other states have also experienced similar situations and have been dealt with effectively. Georgia is prepared to handle similar situations. The date for determining the Electoral College is December 11th. All US states will strive to ensure fair and just elections. The US federal government and state governments are working to address election-related issues. The Electoral Count Reform Act strengthens protections for presidential elections, defines the role of the vice president in the Electoral College counting process, raises the threshold for objections to electors, and increases funding for election security.
