I am unashamed. What about you? So we've still been laughing in between

doing our podcast about Jays' baseball story at the LSU Pancake. I'm sure people will go and look that up. Zach already did. He was watching it where he's at. But it's funny because I didn't have time to tell the story because we ran out of time on the last podcast, but I was watching a game a few weeks ago. I'm a Dodger fan. I was watching the Dodgers play, and there was a guy out in left field, and he caught a home run ball, but it was from the other –

team

And so like, you know, this started back with the Cubs years ago. Like, so the fans start yelling for you to throw the ball back, you know, because you're not supposed to keep one from the other side, you know? And so it was funny. So he catches it. Of course, the camera's on him and then you see him on camera, but none of the people around him noticed it. He reaches in his pocket. He's still got the ball he caught in his glove. He reaches in his pocket, pulls out another ball and then throws it out onto the field.

And the fans go wild. And, you know, he thought he had gotten away with it, but the camera caught him. I thought the same thing about this guy. And if you weren't with us in the last podcast, this was an LSU game and a meaningless game because they've had a rough year playing. It was a midweek game. It's already six to nothing. It's in the eighth inning. And, you know, Tommy Tanks hits his home run. And...

This guy, when you just start thinking about the backstory, because that became the story. The game's over. They showed this guy literally for the next 30 minutes doing all kind of weird. Because one, you were worried about him. I mean, this could kill him. The exit. 109 miles an hour. Yeah. And it was still on the rise. It was just a vicious home run.

But you think about this guy. He positioned himself, his buddy, his family, in the left corner bleachers. He brought his glove.

He wanted this moment. He's anticipating. He had a dream. If I could catch a home run ball at LSU game, that would be all I need. And here's the moment. You have it. And instead of catching the ball, you take it off the noggin, bounces out of the stadium, and then it's such a –

vicious hit that you're concerned about him and he becomes the most famous person at the field and we'll go down in infamy because if you hadn't seen it, it's only funny now that he's okay and the way he was acting about it and just the way the media was

Just knew this. You couldn't have picked a more perfect guy to have a story. And that was the story with this guy in the Dodger game because they sent Buster. What's his name? Buster Olney. He went out and interviewed him. And, of course, they keep going back to this guy.

And he said, so they asked him, and he's a Hispanic guy, and he was pretty funny and engaging. I mean, you think about it, this guy's just out in the stands. They said, well, obviously you came prepared. He said, oh, yeah, I don't like getting booed. He said, who likes to get booed? And then he said, but my wife's going to be mad at me about something. And so their interview, these are the guys in the booth. They said, well, why is your wife going to be mad? And he said, we don't have enough time. Yeah. All right.

I thought, this guy is on national television being interviewed by these guys and that's a funny line. But it's like the guy for the Cubs who caught the foul ball in the World Series. Oh, what's his name? I don't remember. Brinkman? Look it up. Somebody look it up.

Bartman. Bartman. Bartman. That became the most famous foul ball. The guy had to move. He had to move out of the state of Illinois. That's what I was going to say. He had to move because he thought, oh, I caught a foul ball.

And now the city wants to hurt you because you cost us. He was getting death threats. Well, and the people were even believing in superstition. Because it was fan interference because it wasn't a foul ball. Yeah. And it cost them a chance to win the game. Exactly. And then they're like, oh, it's just a curse. You know, we're cursed. We'll never win the World Series. Curse of the goat or whatever. Which eventually they did, didn't they? Yeah, they won. They won the 16th. So much for any other gods. Somewhere Bartman hopefully can get his life back together. I don't know, but...

Things happen. They do. Zach, you were going to say something. Well, I was thinking about my son. You'd be proud of him, Jace. We're under construction right now at the house. And so one of them busted up. One of my kids busted a pipe outside and it's just spewing out water. So I get the little, they got a little tool you use to turn off a water meter. So I went out to the water meter and

and I turned off the water meter, and it did stop. The leak stopped outside in the yard, but what I noticed was that inside the house, the water was still going because I called Jill, and I said, hey, just so you know, I just turned the water off, and so you won't have water for a little while until I fix this pipe. She said, well, I'm using the water right now. It's on, which kind of got me worried. I was like, how in the world did I turn off the water meter

And and I still have water. And then I remember that when we first moved here, there was a I saw an old water meter in the back of our property. And I got to think and I wonder if that water meter is connected to the house. But it was covered up with probably I don't know, probably 20, 28 inches of of pine straw leaves, mulch, just like a mulch pile.

And so I had a guy come out here. I said, Hey, I need you to move this mulch pile. Cause I think there's a water meter somewhere under that pile and I need you to find it. So I paid a guy to come out here with a front end loader. He spent four hours moving everything around. He calls me up, said, look, there ain't no water meter under there. I promise you no water meter. I said, there's a water meter under there somewhere. He said, there's not a water meter. I've looked everywhere. And

And then I remembered that Fred had, he's now in the metal detecting. He has a metal detector. Oh. And so the, the, the game was $50 to the, to the man who finds the water meter. And I'm in the middle of the. He went and spent 800 to win 50. Exactly right. Well, but he's already, he's been finding stuff. So he, so while we were recording the last podcast, he, he bust up in the, in the studio here and,

And he's, it gives me the thumbs up. He's like, I found it. Where's my money? Um, so he, I went out there and he had the podcast. He wants to get paid. He wants to get paid. I go out there and he has the whole thing exposed and swept off. And it's like this, it's like, there's a hole about two feet deep. And at the bottom of that hole is in fact, a metal cover to a water meter.

So my son, he's a metal detector guy. He's a fishling now. Has he ever watched that show, Duck Family Treasure? He's heard about it, yes. Is that what got the fever going? That's what got the fever going. Look at what it does. You're inspiring the young. I just figured my cousin, who was an executive producer, would have said, you know what? That show worked. My son has become a metal detector. This is the first I'm hearing about it. Yeah. On the podcast. Yeah.

Well, we do in our family. It takes a lot for someone to say, good job, Jace. Well, Jace, can I tell you what? I was actually going to tell you that he was into metal detecting when I heard you were coming through Black Mountain, but you never stopped by the house. Well, we did blow the horn. How old is your house? My house? Your house is old. Built in 1897. Okay. Well, I need to investigate that. The next time I come through, I will not blow the horn until I'm in the yard.

There you go. And we'll, me and Fred are going to go out and see what's, what's in your yard. Fred found anything out there, like a value, any kind of coins and stuff? Cause you should have found what he's found, um, is a lot of these, um, the old windows that they used to have, they had weights on them, metal weights. So they were tied to ropes that there's like these long metal or like iron, uh,

that the rope is tied to it. It's on a pulley system and that's how they operated windows apparently back in the,

late 1800s. So he's found a bunch of those weights, which means that, I don't know if there's another house here that, I don't know, but it's like they're weights to a window. Because that is right. Only knew a professional metal detector who could come and tell you exactly what you're dealing with. But maybe you'll find one. Yeah, maybe you'll find a team, like a team that would have their own television show. You need a guy, you know, that's a close friend or in your family that possesses a certain set of skills that could

Train young Fred for future endeavors. I'm smelling a whole new series here. The next gen. Next gen. Well, what I like about that, if you haven't noticed what our family does, is we...

Try to do things that are good, clean, fun, like duck hunting, metal detecting. And these are things you can do with your family that take up their time, especially the kids. That's good, clean, fun. You can do together. And we've used that as a platform to declare Jesus. Dad used to always say when he'd speak to audiences, especially families with young men in it,

He would always say, if you want your kid to stay out of trouble, you won't find trouble in a duck blind or a deer stand. But you will find trouble in town. That's what he used to always tell us. Oh, yeah. They used to have that cheesy saying, if you don't want to have to hunt for your kids, take them hunting. Yeah. But I agree. Somebody said, I think when we had for King and Country, which I've been doing a lot, Missy and I,

to promote that movie we actually for our charity with the craniofacial families that we help and a lot of you people have supported and sent your money to which we appreciate you know missy's like you know some of the we pay a lot for their surgeries and travel when we do our

our fun day for them and invite all the families. And basically what we're doing in that charity at which my daughter leads is connecting these families. Cause it's such a life of suffering and you need that support. You know, Galatians six comes to mind, carry each other's burdens. And, um,

She had an idea, which I thought was fantastic. I love it because my wife, when it's something about Jesus or kids, she is a warrior. And I sent that statement to Joel Smallbone. He's the one that dresses kind of weird, which is probably normal for our society. But to us, it was a little weird. I sent that to him because I said, well, we...

We offered tickets to all the families to go see the movie Unsung Hero because it's such a family-oriented movie. And it also is a family that is reliant on God's power. And it's a message of faith to trust God no matter what circumstances because their early beginnings was tough.

But I thought, what a great idea, babe. Because it's so inspirational, especially for the families that we're helping. They need these moments of inspiration. Here's something good and clean you can do with your family. Go see this movie. You'll laugh, you'll cry, but you'll be inspired that you're part of God's forever family. So I was really proud that

that uh we got to purchase a lot of tickets for these families so one story i didn't get to tell in the last podcast i only had one thing i had to do we were doing podcasts the day of the wedding and so they were all getting stuff ready and you know prepped and all that stuff and so i had one job to go by we we were serving tea at the wedding and we're having to get 20 gallons normally i would make my own tea but you know we had too many people for that so

McAllister's has really good tea. I mean, if I'm going to buy tea in town, that's typically where I would go. So I told Lisa, so I'll order it and I'll pick it up on my way out. So I stopped by our local McAllister's and I go in and said, all right, I'm here for the tea for a wedding. I got my suit on. I mean, I'm ready to go preach. I'm on my way to the wedding. And she said, okay, 20 cups of tea.

I said, 20 cups of tea? And she said, yep, that's what I got you here for. And I was like, I was told to pick up 20 gallons of tea. And she said, well, I'm looking at the order here. It's 20 cups of tea. And I was like, we're going to have a lot of thirsty people. And I said, I got, you know, we got 175 people. And she said, let me check. And I said, do you have that much? Can you make me some tea? I said, because literally I'm an hour and a half away here.

And she said, oh, no, we made it. But it's just rung up as 20 cups. I said, OK. I said, but you have the tea. She said, oh, yeah, I see it now. It's back in Milwaukee. I was like, OK, so good.

And she said, so 20 cups of tea, right? I was like, nope, I'm going to need those 20 gallons. So what happened was the computer had it wrong, but she was having a problem making the link because she was like, what do I do? I said, tell you what. I said, are you telling me that we're just undercharged in your system here? That's what it is. I said, then just ring me up 20 gallons and I'll pay you for it. I'll pay you for the rest of it.

She said, okay, I got it. But it was so funny having to walk her through this process. I thought, as I usually do when I go into some place to buy stuff now, is that people just have a hard time connecting. I thought you were going down a road where somehow we were going to get 20 gallons of water changed into tea. Which would have been a dime too. That's a lot of tea.

Well, what's funny, so two girls start bringing out. They had like two gallons each, and they go to hand them to me. I said, could you guys load them in the car? Because I'm like ready to go to the – could y'all do that for me? I said, I'll make it worth your while. So then they're hauling tea out to my car, and we wind up with 20 gallons of tea. It's so funny you bring that up because we're such tea snobs. I mean –

So Missy, she'll want to go somewhere and I'll say, how is their tea? She's like, I don't know. I was like, well, that matters. It matters a lot. Because there's very few places you're at. Because it's all about the water, whatever water. You got to have good tea. You got to have good water. In fact, we just did on our last cooking episode that appears on Blaze TV. You got to subscribe to Blaze to get it. We did a whole segment on tea because tea is such a big deal. So we had a blind taste test with Cy Bollinger.

dad and mom as to who made the best tea. So you'll have to check that out on the cooking with the Robertsons to be able to do that. Let's, uh, let's take our first break. But surprisingly, McAllister's Chick-fil-A and the airlines, if you ask for a black tea, which I guess I'm the only person in society who does it. I do it too. Well, I'll say, I want black tea with a cup of ice. And so they stop and they're like, what do you mean? I was like, I want a black tea and I'm going to pour that over ice. And she's like, so you want an iced tea?

Like, yeah, but I was just letting you know. Because you don't want to bring something out in a bottle of iced tea. That's no good. Exactly. And so I'm making my own, and it's always good. It's good. Yeah, because they brew it. It's all about the brew. So Zach, Melissa came over, speaking of tea.

and she's right in with the tea snob with us. Oh, yeah. I mean, it's strong in her. And so somebody said, oh, I was making tea. And they were like, why are you making this tea? Because of those 20 gallons of Macalester's tea, I had about four gallons left. So I was giving that to the kids because that's day old tea now, which I don't drink that old tea. And

And so I'm making some fresh for me and Melissa. And they were like, why are you making fresh tea? I was like, I've got my cousin here. We're not going to serve that Dale McAllister. Are you kidding me? That's only fresh. It's a dangerous addiction you guys have. I remember when I ran for Congress.

Willie asked Willie to introduce me to some of his money friends and because I was raising money campaign and he said, yeah, come over. I'm going to take you out to meet somebody, be at my house at five o'clock or whatever it was. I get there and probably within an hour before me getting to his house, he was making tea.

And he had the glass container on the right there on the side of the counter. And he pours the boiling water in the glass container into where the teabags were at and, and the exploded. I remember that. Yeah. So the boiling water hits his legs. And I mean, it is like third, I mean, it's bubbled up. I mean,

four inches above this above the the shin bone was a blister about four inches uh high it was a bad burn oh it was horrible and i was like are you still you still want to go again no we'll go we'll go i said i don't know dude and so he was he was in pretty bad shape so when you imagine that you go to the er and they're like what happened he's like i was making some tea it's a tea accident i

I never heard of that. Don't we all learned a valuable lesson that day. Don't put boiling water in a glass jug. I mean, it was a DED. I've never seen. I mean, it was, I remember when that happened. I mean, yeah. I'm surprised that he continued with the, with the trip. We drove out to Allah and, and, and we were out there all night, you know, till late, late at night. And, um,

He was still raising money for you, even with third-degree burns. What a cousin. And I'm going to push back about you saying that's an addiction. If tea is bad for you, I'll give you Exhibit Uncle Si. Yeah.

Evidently, it's not that bad for you because he has defied most laws of nature with staying alive as long as he has. He drinks a gallon a day. When we appeared, two gallons, we appeared on Dr. Oz together as a family back when the show was going on. Dr. Oz said, who do you think in your family has the healthiest liver? And somebody jokingly said, well, we know it's not Cy. And he was like, wrong.

Because tea is a great diuretic for your liver. He said, Uncle Si drinking that tea has the healthiest liver. Oh, you need to get on some of that tea. You drink a lot of tea. I drink a lot of tea. I drink tea. Yeah, I love tea. But you had bad liver enzymes, though. I make it and drink it every day. Yes, because I'm fat, Zach. Me too. And I love making it. I like hearing the gurgle sound. Oh, yeah. I'm like, they have tea makers. Do you know now, though, that Mr. Coffee has quit making tea makers?

I don't know what's going to happen when this last one goes out. We're just going to have to go back to boiling on the stove, I guess. Well, there's always a way. I have connections. I know people. Well, let me know. There's a warehouse somewhere with 1984 NIVs and Mr. Coffee Tea Makers. So...

By the way, Zach brought it up because I get every other week, I get an email asking what Bible you use. It's the 1984 NIV, but quit looking for it because it's not out there. Quit looking for it because I've said I don't think it's the greatest translation. I mean, a lot of things, I just think they get wrong. The 84 is better than the 2011 or whatever the newest one is, but you're right. There's some issues. I've started following Zach's lead and going with the...

It's nothing major. That's why I did the little Greek. But we've memorized all our Bible verses in this version. That's the problem. Yeah, it is a problem. It doesn't sound quite right to me otherwise. Which, by the way, since we're here, Acts 16, we are finally going to get to that story that we've been pushing for the last few podcasts to try to get to. We've kind of told the story, but there's a couple of elements in it I want to read. We're in Acts 16.

And we had Lydia's conversion. Paul is in Philippi. And then there's this girl who we talked about a few podcasts ago who is a fortune teller. But it's coming from this evil spirit that she has, that has possessed her. And so, Jase, I forgot how you described it. Well, I said that even though she didn't say anything wrong about

When we get to Acts 16 and 17, you're really going to see how this is the true God against all these gods. I mean, Rome was to say that there was a God on every street corner is not an embellishment. Right. They, from Mars to Jupiter to Artemis, these are just off the top of my head here, but they were just into...

that when you think, well, what are these gods? You know, I'll just think of Greek mythology and all the Greek gods, and that was the culture at this time. And you just think about what Paul and the other disciples are up against here. They're going around saying there's one true God.

Well, that was just, you want to pick a fight? Yeah. Go do that in a place where they're like, oh, no, everybody has their own God, which is not a whole lot different than our culture today. You figure out who God is. See, when you think, well, what are these guys? They're made up. People make up. You say, what is a God? Like, we're going to get to the...

Or did we already do that when they, yeah, we already did that about, uh, Zeus and, uh, it was, yeah, that was back when their first journey Hermes and Zeus. Remember that? I mean, they saw a miracle and they're like, Oh, the gods are real. No, these are fantasy gods that they made up. People have made up as a way to excuse basically how they want to live. I mean, even when you get into, uh, what was the woman who, uh,

the temple of, was it Diana? Yeah. Where they're having sex. There was an emphasis on it. Yeah. One of the two. Yeah, I think it was Corinth.

They're like, it's okay because the God, this is the God we follow. We're offering sacrifices. So we're, well, it just sounds like a good way to have sex with a lot of people. Yeah, which was part of their culture. And we established that when we were talking about Philippi, that this place is very Gentile. It's a Roman military stronghold. And it's so not Jewish that they didn't even have a Jewish synagogue there.

Which is the only one that all these other ones he finds a synagogue when he gets to that one. They didn't even have one. So you remember he establishes his first relationships with Lydia by a river. That was the only place he could find anybody that seemed to fear God was down that river, babe. Well, exactly. And that's why I brought up the history of Philippi. Remember when we went through Alexander the Great and the Cleopatra later and all these things that have happened. Who were so into this...

occult world and supernatural happenings that they had invented. So this slave girl, she basically didn't say anything. Here's what she said. These men are, now she's got this spirit. What verse is she at? M17. These men are servants of the Most High God who are telling you the way to be saved, which is true.

So whatever the spirit she had recognized what Paul and Silas were doing. Which is whether it was a demon or whatever it was, it wasn't unlike. Remember when Jesus cast out the demons? They all know who Jesus was. That's right. But the problem is when you're tapping into a source that is not God, the God, you're

That's unacceptable to Paul. And that's why he cast the spirit out. Well, and also, I think, let's take another break. So, Zach, I've got a sobering statistic. New estimates indicate that there were more than 1 million abortions in 2023, which is the highest amount since 2012.

So we're still having a big battle when it comes to abortion in our culture and in our country. Yeah, that's unfortunate. We got to move the hearts and minds of people for sure. Yeah, and a lot of people, I think, thought when Roe v. Wade was overturned,

You know that this is going to be the end of abortion, but it's just kind of galvanized those that are for it and those that are against it. And obviously, what we're trying to do is save babies and save moms and young men as well who find themselves in these situations where they have an unplanned pregnancy.

Our friends at Preborn have a network of clinics that are positioned in the highest abortion areas, many times next door or very close to a Planned Parenthood where most of the abortions are occurring. Last year, Preborn's network of clinics saved over 58,000 babies, and we praise God for that. Every day, Preborn welcomes 200 babies whose lives have been rescued from the clutches of death.

By introducing a mother to her child on ultrasound, a baby's chance at life doubles. Mothers and babies are showered with God's love and assistance for up to two years. So what I love about this is not just pro-life, but it's pro-love.

And $28 a month can be the difference between the life and death of a child. All your gifts are tax deductible. So we're asking you to join together and help mothers choose life. You can donate by dialing pound 250 and say the keyword baby. That's pound 250 keyword baby. Or you can go to preborn.com slash unashamed. That's preborn.com slash unashamed. Let's join in with our friends at preborn.

and save some more childs and save some more babies. I also think it may be because it says in verse 18, she kept this up for many days. I think she just got on his last nerve. Well, it could have been an annoyance, but I really think the greater point is

is this is not from God. - Yeah, and he says, "Finally, Paul became so troubled, for whatever reason, that he turned around and said to the Spirit," so we definitely know it was the Spirit, "In the name of Jesus Christ, I command you to come out of her." At that moment, the Spirit left her. Now, to Jase's point about the surroundings,

This, of course, upset the owners of this girl because they've been making money off of her. So they dragged them. Which is another God. Exactly. I mean, people serve money as a God. They brought them into the marketplace. Verse 20, they brought them before the magistrates. These men are Jews and are throwing the city into an uproar.

So you see there's kind of an anti-Jewish bias there too. You can see that. By advocating customs unlawful for us Romans to accept or practice...

That's not even true. Well, because they're saying there's a God and it's not any of these gods. Right. Because the Roman custom was any God works. And the irony was Paul is a Roman citizen, but this guy has no idea. Go ahead, Zach. Yeah, I think we always, on this podcast, a lot of times we push back on over-spiritualizing things.

things, but there's also the danger. I think you look at this text of under spiritualizing it. Like there, obviously she was doing something by the power of some evil spirit. Right. That was not of, not of this natural world enough to where Paul rebuked the spirit and, and it stopped. And so I think it's, it is evidence. There's something going on here. I think too, like probably her, whatever she was doing was, it seems to me it was probably disruptive to what

they were, they're, they're what they were trying to accomplish here. And she, cause that, that idea of the, that she's following them and crying out, you know, so this isn't necessarily like, um,

a proclamation of truth that she's doing, she's becoming a real annoyance and a hindrance probably to... And a distraction. And a distraction. Yeah. You see that in our culture today. I mean, there's been stuff in the news, even recently about churches, when an illustration becomes a distraction. Yeah. Let's have an event. We're going to share Jesus. And then you do things that are...

that seem not to line up with God's character. You're taking the culture to try to draw people in and then excusing it by saying, well, Jesus met with tax collectors and sinners, but sometimes the illustration of,

is such a distraction to the power of God and the message of Jesus that it's not right. It was kind of my illustration I used in my sermon days, a couple of sermons ago when I talked about Buc-ee's, you know, which everybody loves Buc-ee's because it's like a convenience store on steroids. The problem is that I laid out, because I was talking about how sometimes we fall in love with the messenger and not the message and who the man is, Jesus.

Buc-ee's is not very convenient. I mean, when I drive by one, there's a hundred gas pumps there, but there's also about a thousand people in there. And so I was like, I'm just going to stop at the convenience store at the end of my street. You know why? It's convenient.

And so I was making the point that sometimes the big and the shiny draws you in, but it's really not what it was designed to be. And that's exactly what happens. Well, that's kind of, I mean, because I've been asked 10 times about this situation that happened in Missouri just in the past week. You know, I mean, that was, and it was what I was describing. They had some kind of a guy dancing around on a pole. Apparently he had been on one of these shows before.

America's Got Talent. Yeah, one of those. They were using it to draw people in. They're like, hey, we brought hundreds of people to the Lord. I've sat in rooms before and thought just like that. Like, how can we do something to get people to come to listen to this? But so a guy, another preacher, gets up and basically rebukes the whole bunch for having the guy come in and do this. Well, he was subtle about it.

Not really. Well, without knowing the specific situation. He was subtle in the Jezebel spirit, sort of subtle. He read the mail. Without knowing the situation, and I was not familiar with any party involved, so I'm giving you my take without knowing the details, circumstances, or whatever. Sure.

But just my overall take, I was like, seems like this guy that rebuked everybody is a lot like my dad from a personality standpoint. And that when most people say something that's like socially awkward, most people think, oh, maybe I shouldn't have said that. But with Phil's personality and this guy, they kind of like that.

You know, and so, which, Phil, I think it's a good trait, which is why people are drawn to that because you're not scared to share what you really believe despite what people think about you. Well, and to sum up what I'm saying, there's some people with unique personalities who would rather speak the truth no matter what. And.

and have that happen, have that out there, they would much rather do that than be boring. And so that's what I attribute it to. So this guy definitely was in that vein and he kind of rebuked the whole bunch. And then the pastor who put the whole event on, he hollers out like, you're done, that's enough. So, you know, is it a black eye for that church? Yes.

But my point is... The fact that it becomes a national story, yeah. It's not worth... We have a mode, even when we do TV and entertainment, where someone will say something or do something that, not on purpose usually, it's usually innocent. But it might be construed as not in line with the character of God. And it might distract from what we're trying to accomplish internally.

So we always take that, edit that stuff out because we're like, no, no one joke or one illustration is worth the distraction of what we're trying to do here, which is we're trying to get Jesus to the world. Even in our little TV shows and stuff we do, they're not religious shows per se, and they're not.

some kind of scheme of redemption hidden in there. But it's a good, compared to our culture, what's going on, it's a good, safe place for kids. You make a really good point, especially in this context, because a lot of people just said, oh, look at this. We've got this spirit, this girl with a spirit where good, evil, whatever it is,

And we could just take her into every town with us because she's drawing a crowd. But Paul was like, no, that's not what I want. You know, he cast that out. So the crowd joins in this attack on Paul and Silas. The magistrates order them to be stripped and beaten, verse 22. And magistrates are, I don't know if Zach, he's the smartest one here, but they're like the court officials. Like when you would handle misdemeanors or something that, because just think about what they're doing.

I mean, just think from their perspective. These magistrates are like, so the guy cast out a spirit? I mean, they're probably not even thinking this is true. Right. So this is a petty disturbance. That's right. And I think it's important because you see that and you're like, well, are they in major trouble? Because it doesn't seem to fit where after this whole encounter, well, they just let them go. But how do you really prove this? Can you imagine being in front of a court?

And you're like, what's the problem? He's like, well, I cast out a spirit. I mean, as soon as I hear that, I'm like...

What exactly is the problem here? You're going to try to prove that these men cast out a spirit of your money-making scheme? Oh, who was a fortune teller in how you were making money? Which, by the way, that's not the charge they said, did they? They said these men are Jews, and they're stirring up trouble, and they're doing the insane things that Romans should be. They didn't say anything about a girl with a spirit. Well, that's why I brought it up, because how are you going to prove—

What is your proof of this? I think part of what they were saying, though, because my translation says they advocate customs that are not lawful for us Romans to accept or practice. What they're missing is in Acts 17, as his custom was, Paul went into his whole job. It's just right here. Went into the synagogue and on three Sabbath days, he reasoned with them from the scriptures and

explaining, here's what he was doing, explaining and proving that Christ had to suffer and rise from the dead. So he was with the gospel just right along there. Which I think that's what... Didn't deviate to the right or the left. Yeah. He said, I'm doing my job. That's what he was saying. Yeah. You get back to Acts 4, you get the idea of what they may have been saying that was so offensive. It's Acts 4.12. And there is...

salvation in no one else. For there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved."

I think that's what they're angry about. My point is, the point of the story, though, is they're not saying what happened. No. Because nobody's going to believe that. So they're just... Because they're upset because they lost their way to make money. They're mad because their money's been taken away. But it's funny because it's the same thing that happened...

at the beginning of Acts, when Stephen's stoned, they bring a false accusation, just like they're doing here. A different group of people, though, but the Jews brought false accusation against Stephen. They brought a false accusation against Jesus. I think that's the thing that when you walk in the kingdom, when the accusation comes, it's never going to be an accusation against what you're actually saying or a proclamation of God's kingdom.

It's always going to be a false accusation. Well, this is cancel culture before it. That's right. That's it. That's a great point. Cancel culture is like, no, that's been going on since Acts chapter 16. He said, this Jesus I'm proclaiming to you is the Christ. He said.

Paul, some of the Jews were persuaded. Well, look, he's making headway. And Jo and Paul and Silas, as did a large number of God-fearing Greeks and a few prominent women. But the Jews were jealous. So they rounded up some bad character from that marketplace, formed a mob, and started a riot in the city. Well, that's what they do these days.

Well, yeah, you have a totally different circumstance in the next chapter, but it's the same result. So here's the difference with our cancel culture, Jay's and theirs.

In verse 23, after they had been severely flogged. So this is more than just getting kicked off of Facebook. They beat the fire at them because of severe flogging. I mean, we know that from the crucifixion story, right? This is a serious beating. They were thrown into prison and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully.

Upon receiving such orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet into stock. So they've been stockaded here inside the prison. They've been beaten. And so you'd think, and this verse amazes me, the next verse. Because, I mean, you'd think at this point, you're like, man, I don't know. This didn't seem to work out too well. Instead, about midnight, Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God and

And the other prisoners were listening to them. We just think about that for a second. Because what do we do? What we do is we get angry and then we have to basically create some kind of political revolt. Yeah. Because we're so afraid. Our rights have been violated. Yeah. And I'm all for fighting for religious freedom and whatnot. But man, it seems to me like these guys are in a culture. They don't have any freedoms. But what do they do? In the midst of persecution...

They sing hymns and they pray. They manifest the Holy Spirit in them

every blessing that's always seen you pour out, I turn back to praise. That's what they're doing in this moment. And it's them embodying that type of worship of God that starts to have consequences outside of their own circle. I don't think they were trying to evangelize here. I think they were just literally lifting up the name of God through prayer and song and other prisoners were listening to them. No, that's a great point. And really took me back when you said that acts for earlier, remember right after Peter said that in acts four,

then they were beaten. And remember it said they considered it a privilege to be beaten for the sake of Christ. So that's a whole different mindset. Well, but whether they were trying to evangelize or gospel, as you said, or not, they were. Yeah, that's it. Yeah, they certainly were. Because the jailer, which we're fixed to see what happens, for some unknown reason, he starts talking about being saved and what do I need to do? That's right.

So it's making an impact. And Luke, I think he's watching. I think the jailer is watching these guys. I mean, this is something that I feel pretty strongly about that we spend a lot of effort and I have in my life spent a lot of effort in ministry trying to capture people, keep people, however you want to say it.

But the Bible says that the workers, the problem is not the harvest. The harvest is plenty. The workers are few. I think if you lean into living out a kingdom life, I'm seeing it. Like people will come and say, hey, wait, what is this? What are you doing? What is this about? And it's happening here. Lee Strobel talks about this in his conversion experience where he calls it boomerang evangelism. I can't remember the entire story, but there was something like

there was a gospel exchange going on between two people. And then somebody is in the room and they hear it

And they're not even in the conversation, but they come to Christ. It may have been him or someone else. I can't remember the exact story, but it was like someone came to Christ because of a conversation that somebody else was having that they overheard. And I think that's what you're seeing here. You're seeing this jailer guy. He's just in there watching the jail. And they're in there doing the kingdom stuff. And he's like, wait, how in the world are they? Why are they singing?

And why are they praying to God? They don't think he realized they're in jail, which created in him a curiosity to know about how to be saved. And it was the unexpected, too. Let's take our last break. But I think, too, it doesn't seem to make sense with the—they were stripped and beaten and flogged, and then they're praying and singing.

But I do think there's something to be being eyewitnesses of the resurrected Lord. You know, read 1 Corinthians 15, I think, with Paul. Because I watched this movie the other night that I had never seen Missy. It just came up. We were trying to find a movie, and she's like, oh, that was a good movie. It was called Risen. Yeah, yeah. Have you seen that? Yeah, yeah. That's loosely based on Scripture. They got the events right, but they can't.

They kind of created their own character who was the head of the Roman guard. Yeah, was trying to prove. That was investigating the resurrection. They were scared that they were going to steal the body. You remember that? Yeah. But it's a great movie. I like the movie. We watched it again. And what was captured there is that it was different for them because he would come in there and threaten them.

and say, this is post-resurrection. He would threaten the disciples like, if you don't tell us where the other disciples are, we're going to torture you and kill you. And they were like, go ahead.

Because they were with a dead person who was alive. They're like, well, where's he at? I think it was Bartholomew who told this Roman official. He's like, he's everywhere because he was disappearing. He's almost like hippie giddy. And so I do think we should take suffering in the name of Jesus the right way.

But I think they're extremely like that because they know that

This is a fact. This is true. So they're singing instead of pouting and crying and moaning. I was going to make that point too, Jace, because there's a reaction. Why don't you read through it? Yeah, there's a reaction that happens here. And I think this is important because their attitude is things are tough, but we're going to sing and pray. And then look what happens, verse 26. Suddenly there was a violent earthquake.

that the foundations of the prison, such a violent earthquake, that the foundations of the prison were shaking. So now that's a response to their singing and praying. It's obvious the Almighty did it. At once, all the prison doors flew open and everybody's chains came loose. So this isn't a normal earthquake. This is one that really- It's a mass, mass de-arming. That's exactly right. It freed everybody there. The jailer woke up.

And when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped. And there's a whole thing we could get into there. If the people got out on your watch, you might as well kill yourself because what's coming is worse. Then Paul shouts, don't harm yourself. We're all here. We ain't going anywhere. And I think, Zach, to your point earlier, this is what really impacts this man. Nobody left.

So the jailer called for lights. He rushed in. He fell trembling before Paul and Silas. He then brought them out and said, sirs, what must I do to be saved? He said, I need to get, I'm on the wrong side. Whatever you got, I want some of it, which is really powerful. And it shows you the power of what happens when we witness that resurrection that Jace was talking about. They replied, believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, you and your household. Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him.

So much to skip over baptism.

They didn't. No, and they did it that night. Well, I mean, it says midnight in verse 25. So now what do you think? It's two or three in the morning? We're middle of the night or early in the morning. Three or four in the morning. So, so much for, you know, let's wait to make some kind of public confession. I mean, I'm just saying, to your point, Phil, I don't think we give it as important information

of what it is, you know, we just don't, for some reason, we tend to think, and I think it's just because of what we talked about before. There's so many debates. Three o'clock in the morning, they all agree to be baptized. Somebody told them that. Yep. But the only somebody to talk, another Apostle Paul, said,

I think religious groups are scared that somehow you're calling it a work or something that you can do, but it's definitely an opportunity. Well, no, it's an opportunity. Sure. And it's how they reacted. So then a few more hours ago, now it's daylight, verse 35. The magistrate sent their officers to the jailer with the order. Now, this is weird. Release those men.

I mean, sorry, too late. The Almighty already did that when he did the earthquake. Yeah. But something happened in the storyline there, and we don't know what it is. From the false accusations to now, it's like the— Well, that's why I brought up it was a mis—this is beyond—it's less than a misdemeanor. Yeah. They have some kind of altercation that wasn't like they were fighting or someone got injured. They took away these guys' chance of making money. Yeah.

And they pressed charges and they were false, yet they were technically true as far as the customs of the laws, because they were saying that.

Acts 4.12, basically. Salvation is found in no one else but Jesus. And that technically was a violation of Roman law because they're like, any God will do as long as you just don't hurt anybody. And it's, you know, as long as no one gets hurt, basically. And all they heard was these guys are Jews.

They're about to find out. No, they were more than that. They were also Roman citizens. Yeah. The jailer told Paul, the magistrates have ordered that you and Silas be released. Now you can leave. Go in peace. He's happy. His family is saved. He's like, you know, now you can leave. But Paul said to the officials...

or to the officers, they beat us publicly without a trial. And here's the money phrase, because this is going to set the stage for what's going to happen in the rest of Paul's ministry, even though we are Roman citizens. Dad, that's what they call it. That's what they call a DED. Don't ever do that. I noticed that they jumped from, ran upon Lydia and her conversion and

And it says the last words of what happened after Paul and Silas came out of the prison, they went to Lydia's house. Yeah. They went out there and one just was converted. Because that was a house church. I think that was pretty. It was the very first house church. That's exactly right. So anyway, he makes a big deal. And Paul says, no, we're not going to leave quietly. They can come themselves and escort us out. When the officers reported the magistrate that they heard Paul and Silas were Roman citizens, that's a big uh-oh. Because you don't do that.

You can't, they had, they were built on the same system. We are, you had due process. You had rights as a Roman citizen. They were alarmed. They came to appease them and escorted them from the prison, requested them to leave the city. And then they went to Lydia's house, as you mentioned. But this is eerily similar to what happened in Acts 14, 20. Yep. After they stoned Paul.

And then I love this. It's one of my favorite verses in the Bible. Verse 19 of chapter 14. Then some Jews came from Antioch and Iconium and won the crowd over. They stoned Paul and dragged him outside the city thinking he was dead. But after the disciples had gathered around him, he got up and went back into the city. You would think he got up and got the heck out of there. And here you see the same thing. They're in prison.

This earthquake happens, and he's like, no, we want an apology and an escort. And the same thing is going to happen again later in Acts 21 in Jerusalem. And ultimately, that's the one that's going to put him on the track to Rome. That's borderline present. Yeah.

If you get in the prison system and all of a sudden the whole thing starts crumbling down and you've got some people that are saved, y'all need to lead us out of here. What would have been fun, Jase, is if you could have the stories, and we don't have them, of what happened when that Philippian jailer and his family hooked up with Lydia and her family and then the other groups there and just saw what happened. Oh.

In that city, because that's exactly what went on there. But that's why I made the reference in our last, or I guess podcast before, two podcasts ago about, you know, Paul has this little greeting at the end of Philippians to the members of the kingdom that were part of Caesar's household. Yeah. This is the kind of boldness and courage that it takes to take on any power that sets itself up.

Instead of God. Because you got to remember, these people were all bowing the knee to Caesar. He was the God of this age, even to the point of where they tried to change the calendar. So it wouldn't be a revolve around Jesus, but Caesar. They tried to implement a law that said we count time by Caesar. Right.

And the other thing is, when you're showing the character of God, you never know how you're going to impact people. This jailer, they could have had an accident in that inner cell and been killed. Instead, the jailer and his family were saved as a result of it. So it's very powerful. It's an incredible story. It's one of the best stories. It only took us about four podcasts to get it out there, but we got it. And next time we'll move on to Thessalonica. Dad's giving us a little preview. We'll get into that.

Don't make some shame.
