buying is rolling out the red carpet for inDiana's prime minister nor renda mode.

the american leader is welcoming the indian one to washington with a state visit and on, or usually reserved for the closest allies of the united states. The warm welcome comes despite accusations that mode has stiver descent and crack down on a free press at home.

I responded, osama holda, so why is the White house cording india so heavily?

Well, india is the world's most populous country and the us. Seit as an independent sable partner encountering the influence of china, I will say IT is no secret that this White house sees china as the single biggest foreign icy threat of the current era, and a senior administration official told me that while the relationship between india in the us is deep on a whole bunch of front, china is an undeniable factor, and I will say this view is not limited to the White house mode will also be addressing a joint meeting of congress. Today, I spoke with congresswoman raja Christiana mothy. He's a ranking member of the house that's focusing on china threats.

That relationship with india is incredibly important in stabilizing the security situation in the end position c region and enabling us to basically lower the possibility of conflict.

Look, I mean, india is not collaborating with the us. On china as a favor to americans. India has had its own long standing rival rate with its neighbor.

Or yes, IT sounds as if the us. And india have common interest on national security, but don't necessarily see I D eye .

on everything, definitely. And this visit exposes the tension inhering inviting form policy vision between values and geopolitical priorities. Biden came into office talking about how is foreign policy was going to send her human rights and democracy.

And india, Frankly, makes that conversation tRicky. I was speaking with her phone nor adee he's with the Georgetown school of foreign service. And he pointed out that while india is indeed the world's largest democracy with viBrant elections, a large part of what makes a liberal democracy function is currently being undermined.

The accusations of back sliding relatives, bigotry attacks, press attacks and cil society make this a particularly awkward moment in which to celebrate the two democratic countries coming together to contest china. You know.

earlier I mentioned that senior biden official alive spoke with, well, you know, told me that they do discuss these sensitive issues of religious freedom and human rights, but it's delicate. The official told me the indians feel uncomfortable if they think the americans are lecturing them in public. That being said, more than seventy democratic members of congress signed a letter urging the by administration to bring up human rights and democratic values during this visit.

Then is the united states just want to look the other way on the use things? Because.

well, I will say experts put IT slightly differently. They'd say china is the accelerant in this relationship, but india is on a zone, a growing power and mode and bite in our planning to announce a plan today, in fact, to build fighter jets in india, fighter their engines. And you know, I will say this is just one of a long list of announcements for deep CoOperation on issues ranging from visas to space exploration.

Bitten has described to the U. S. India relationship as the defining partnership of this century. And so there's a sense that he's willing to perhaps, you know, citified differences to really play a long game with india. mp.

r. White house corresponded osmia holiday. Thanks for checking in.

my pleasure.

Around the clock, search for a missing submersible is running at a time.

The five people aboard went missing in the north atlantic while diving near the rack of the titanic. International search and rescue effort is being organized through a unified command center at the U. S. Coast guard base in boston.

Walter whitman is with member station W. B. R. Following the search, he joined us now for any hopeful news overnight.

No news overnight, unfortunately. So rescue teams continue their search all through the night, but they still haven't found anything. The big development was in the search yesterday when coastguard officials said they had detected, quote, underwater and noise is in the search area.

Canadian military surveilLance planes apparently hurt these noises tuesday. And then again yesterday, a marine scientists brought to consult describe those noises as banging sounds. But officials are really cautioning people from drawing too much from that. Coastguard captain jammy fried rick said they haven't determine the source of the noise and that it's not necessarily proof of life.

I can't tell you what the noises are, but what I can tell you is, and I think this is the most important point, we're searching where the noises are, and that's all we can do with this point.

Coastguard officials said they're using remote Operated underwater vehicles to try to pinpoint the origin of the noise, but so far they just haven't found anything.

Now we keep hearing oceans are noisy place. Um how big though is the scale of the search right now?

Yeah, it's a massive Operation. There are multiple planes conducting searches from the coast guard, air national guard and canadian armed forces, sometimes for fourteen hours at a time, and more private research and industry vessels with remote Operated vehicles have joined every day. A friendship with a remote Operated vehicle that can dive down twenty thousand feet is now in the area to that vehicle should be capable of reaching the sea floor .

around the rack. Here's the thing that the supersize, if IT is still in fact, in tack, how much oxygen still be left because it's been a while now right .

um the clock is really winding down here. At the beginning of the search sunday, officials estimated that reversible maybe had ninety six hours a reserve oxygen. Yesterday the number was down to twenty hours, so this morning, they may be running out. But coastguard catch and frederic ick said that oxyde supply is not the only factor here. So we talked about the other number.

I think you're all tracking the actual number. I think there's an important point with that. The oxygen that just one piece of data, right? There are a lot of piece of a data that we need to consider.

For example, if you talk to people who have worked on submarine, they say that carbon dioxide accumulation from breathing can actually even be more concerning than oxygen supply. Sub use carbon dioxide scrubs to absorb that toxic care, and those scrubs require power. So if tighten less power, that's really bad news.

Now at some point, does this search and rescue mission become just a recovery mission? At some point.

if this so merciful isn't located soon, then yes. And coastguard officials are understandably really reluctant in to talk about when that mission might change. Captain jammy Frederick says they they plan to exhaust every option .

we are smacked up in middle search and rescue and and will continue to put every available asset that we have and and ever to define the titan and the crew members .

so the rescue teams, they still have hope, but clearly time is running out.

That's walter. Women have member station W, B, R. In boston. Water things.

Thanks so much.

Residents in east palestine, ohio, could finally get some answers about the disaster that up ended their town in february.

The national transportation safety board today begins hearings to investigate just what cause the fire retrained rail, as well as the decision a few days later to vent and burn hazardous chemicals from the wreckage. Some residents are still displaced as the clean up continues.

Joy grant of the elegant front attended a meeting held by the ntsb last night at east palestine high school. Julie, who is there? What did people have to say?

Yeah, this was a meeting for the community. I counted about seventy or eighty people in the auditorium seeds, ntsb chair Jennifer humanity said at the investigative hearings. Their goal will be to figure out what happened and why, so they can issue safety recommendations. Homey told residents they cannot testify at the hearings because those are meant to get specific questions answered. Since the incident, there have been many public meetings, and some people have been frustrated with environmental regulators, local and state leaders, but at this meeting, many seem genuinely thankful to the ntsb, like Lorry harmon, who remembered seeing Jennifer hum d speak shortly after the derailment.

Everything that was being showed on TV facebook, whatever IT was not sincere. The day that I watched due on T. V, I actually felt like there, there is actually an entity that is with us, with us.

Do you understand what i'm saying? Does everybody understand what i'm saying? Finally, I feel like one entity out of all of them with you in what you said that they touched me very deeply.

So really, what will the nts b be looking at during these hearings?

These hearings will build up a preliminary report the agency released in february. That report found that as the train approached its spalls seen the temperature on one wheel bearing got as high as two hundred fifty degrees farenheit above the outdoor temperature. The rising temperature had been detected earlier on the round by a series of north fox southern hot bearing detectors, but investigators found that by the time the last detector picked up on that extreme heat, IT was too late to stop the derailed ment. So the hearings this week will look at hook box systems, train wheel, barring the preparation of emergency responders, and at that decision to vent and burn chemicals in the tank cars, and among those testifying will be affected, federal agencies, unions, north, fox, southern and two other companies involved in the incident.

Right now, coming back to the people of these palestine, is there anything that the N T S B. Can can do for them?

Yeah, that was the biggest question for some people. Someone asks if the hearings would be an exercise in futility, harmony said. The agency will issue safety recommendations, and then I would be up to the department of transportation to make new rules and especially congress, to Mandate changes in railroad safety standards as july .
