I'm Zoe Kolkin for The Wall Street Journal. Rescue crews have recovered at least 41 bodies following the Washington, D.C. midair plane helicopter crash on Wednesday night.
The deaths of all 67 on both aircrafts make the crash the deadliest aviation disaster on U.S. soil in more than 20 years. Divers continued searching today for aircraft components in the Potomac River and prepared to salvage the plane from the water. Investigators examining black box data recovered from the jet plane are to release a preliminary report within 30 days. The Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index, the Fed's preferred measure of inflation, accelerated in December.
Last month's PCE climbed by 0.3%, contributing to a 2.6% increase over 2024. Core PCE, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, rose by 0.2% last month and by 2.8% over the past 12 months. Slower progress on inflation led the Fed to hold interest rates steady this week, breaking a string of rate cuts that had begun in September.
And the annual profits of ExxonMobil and Chevron fell in 2024, as anemic natural gas prices and narrowed refining margins took a toll. Exxon's annual profit was down about 6.5 percent, while Chevron's return fell about 17 percent from 2023. Despite the weaker results, both companies sent record payouts to investors. President Trump has issued several executive orders to cut down on regulations, while also vowing to cut prices for crude oil.
