Here's your midday brief for Monday, February 10th. I'm Alex Osola for The Wall Street Journal. China's biggest automaker, BYD, is introducing a new AI-powered driving system for low-price mass-market vehicles. The company says it'll make its driving assistance technology system, called Eyes of God in Chinese, available in all of its models, including an electric compact hatchback costing around $9,600, a price that includes the system.
Cars with the tech can self-park and cruise on city roads with minimal human intervention. The news means BYD is widening its lead over Tesla in AI-powered driving tech for Chinese car buyers. Tesla hasn't released its latest driver assistance software in China, owing to what CEO Elon Musk described in January as regulatory hurdles.
McDonald's U.S. same-store sales fell by 1.4 percent last quarter, driven in part by customers spending less money per visit. The company also dealt with the fallout of an E. coli outbreak last year. The chain's fourth-quarter revenue and adjusted earnings per share trailed analysts' expectations. But it said it expects to open more restaurants this year than it projected last year, and its shares were up about 4 percent by late morning.
And Spirit Aerosystems expects to make what's called a going concern disclosure with regulators. The move indicates substantial doubt about the fuselage supplier's ability to continue due to its cash flow and liquidity position. Spirit also said it swung to a loss and posted lower revenue in its preliminary fourth quarter results. We'll have more coverage of the day's news on the WSJ's What's News podcast.
