On Capitol Hill, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell today outlined two paths for the central bank in 2025. Hold rates steady if inflation doesn't improve or cut them if the economy slows more sharply.
Fed officials have been heartened by recent inflation readings that suggest price pressures have continued to be mild, but they're anxious over the Trump administration's potential policy changes that could derail their fight against inflation.
In markets, U.S. stocks pared back earlier losses after Powell's comments. By midday, the Dow was up a fraction of a percent. The S&P 500 was down 0.2 percent, and the Nasdaq was down about half a percent. Markets had opened lower after President Trump signed off on tariffs on steel and aluminum.
And at the AI Action Summit in Paris, Vice President J.D. Vance warned U.S. allies to keep regulation light. He pushed for a regulatory framework that, quote, fosters the creation of AI technology rather than strangles it. The remarks contrast with the push by other world leaders at the summit to agree on a common set of principles that they say will lead to safe AI systems that are energy efficient and available to the developing world.
