No survivors are expected to be found after an American Airlines jet carrying 64 people collided midair with a military helicopter holding three troops yesterday near Washington, D.C., moments before the jet was set to land. Rescue crews have recovered 28 bodies from the plane and one from the helicopter. Confirmation of the deaths of all on board would make the crash the most fatal aviation disaster on U.S. soil in 23 years.

Speaking during a briefing at the White House this morning, President Trump blamed diversity, equity, and inclusion programs and the last two Democratic presidents for the deadly collision, without citing evidence to support his assertions. The U.S. economy grew last year at a slower rate than in 2023, but still at a good pace. The Commerce Department said today that the U.S. gross domestic product, the value of all goods and services produced across the economy, grew 2.5 percent in 2024, boosted by American consumers who just kept spending. And the European Central Bank has lowered interest rates by a quarter point to 2.75 percent from 3 percent on Thursday and signaled that more rate cuts are expected.
