吉米老师说 ** an elephant in the room不是房间里有大象，老外说这个短语的时候可别觉得他疯了。跟老师一起来学学它的真正意思吧~ 一、an elephant in the room≠房间里有大象 看美剧的时候，是不是经常看到这样的台词 ： “It is an elephant in the room.” 难道是说房间里有只大象？它其实是比喻一些非常显而易见的，可是却一直被忽略的棘手问题。 这句习语源于一则寓言故事：有个人参观博物馆，他在那里仔仔细细观察了很多小昆虫，但是却没有注意到屋子里的大象。后来，an elephant in the room这句习语就引申为“（人们不愿涉及的）棘手问题”。简单记忆：一般来说，大象这么大只，如果房间里有只大象肯定是看得见的，除非故意视而不见。因此，an elephant in the room是暗指一个默认准则： “ 我们知道，但是我们清楚那些事情我们不该（不想）知道，所以选择视而不见”。 就像马路上有老人摔倒，但是路人害怕被讹钱，选择视而不见，这就是an elephant in the room。例： When it comes to management system updates, everyone is an elephant in the room. 说到管理制度更新的时候，大家都选择了视而不见。 二、white elephant 不是白象 white elephant 华而不实的东西，累赘之物** 在印度，大象是神灵一般的存在，人们会善待它们，但是照顾大象的成本很高，会给人们带来巨大的经济负担。 这也就引出了white elephant的真实意义： A thing that has no use and is no longer needed, although it may have cost a lot of money. 尽管曾经花费了很多钱，但是现在它已经没用了。 例：The iPhone bought a few years ago is a white elephant. 前几年买的苹果手机已经没用了。 三、see/get a look at the elephant 这个短语其实很好记住，see/get a look at the elephant 刚出现的时候，当时只有在亚洲、非洲才能看得到大象。 因此，对于讲英语的欧美人，大象是稀罕之物，看到大象就像是见过大世面一样。流传下来渐渐变成俚语，引申为“大开眼界、见过世面”。 see/get a look at the elephant 见世面；开眼界；经世故** 例：Seeing many things in China that he had never seen before, William got a look at the elephant. 在中国见到许多从未见过的事物，威廉大开眼界。 表达 “见过世面”** 还可以用： see life/enrich one s experience widen one s horizon/vision 四、show the elephant See the elephant不是看到大象，show the elephant也不是展示大象。 show有展示、解说等意，show the elephant就像在说，把大象拉出来给大家瞧一瞧，见识一下。 但是这么说就太片面了，大家可以稍微进行联想，大象体积庞大，犹如一座大城市。把大象展现出来，就像是在说，把大都市的风景样貌展示给大家看。 show the elephant 展示大都市风貌** 例：The unique civilization not only shows the elephant, but also is a testimony of human history. 独特的文明不仅展现了这座城市的风貌，也是人类历史的见证。 这些elephant不是真的elephant： elephant dugout [ˈdʌɡaʊt] 大壕沟， 大防空洞 rogue[roʊɡ] elephant 离群的凶猛野象 as thick skinned as an elephant 不听人劝；感觉迟钝 have a memory like an elephant 记忆力超群 这些短语和句子你都掌握好了吗？最后留给同学们一个小作业**：** The question of how to better manage people s livelihood is （a very difficult one）.** 这句话括号里的内容可以用什么替代呢？ A. an elephant in the room B. white elephant** 哪个选项是正确的呢？同学们可以在留言区写下你的答案哦, 老师会亲自点评~
