说到吃土，脑海里是不是浮起了“bite the dust”呢？其实bite the dust另有其意，跟随老师来一探究竟吧~

一、Bite the dust 是“吃土”？

Bite [baɪt] 咬Dust [dʌst] 尘土

Bite the dust 翻译成“吃土”？可千万别这么理解，在地道美语中，它有两层含义：

第一个含义：企业破产、机器失灵等。

可以从表面引申出来，当你已经需要bite the dust的时候，说明你的经济情况也不太好；如果机器需要bite the dust，那机器肯定也老化、出故障了。

第二个含义：失败、完蛋、死亡。（类似于网络用语“败者食尘”）

这个含义来源于上世纪的西部电影，当牛仔被击中从马上掉下来，地面扬起的尘土塞了满嘴，这也表明他输了，失败了。还有一种说法可以追溯到《荷马史诗》，书中使用了bite the dust形容战士死亡的惨状。

例1：This machine bites the dust and it has been completely scrapped.

这部机器失灵了，而且它已经彻底报废了。

例2：At the end of the movie, the protagonist bites the dust.

在电影结尾处，主角挂掉了。

二、那么吃土的英语怎么说呢？

其实，“吃土”最为准确的译法是

“live on dirt”

这些表达跟“穷到吃土”很像：

三、Bite the bullet ≠ 咬子弹

Bullet [ˈbʊlɪt] n. 子弹、弹丸 Bite the bullet 是“咬子弹”吗？

它的实际意思跟咬相关，子弹是危险的东西，要做到跟“子弹”挂钩的职业可能需要很大的努力，是比较困难的一件事。

因此，就可以得出bite the bullet的真正意思：

To deal with a difficult situation which cannot be avoided对付一个无法避免的困难的境遇。

咬紧牙关、忍住困难做某事、硬着头皮做某事

例：She had to bite the bullet and stay up late for the final exam.

为了期末考试，她不得不咬紧牙关背书。

四、Bite back = 咬回去？

Bite back 并不是字面意思“咬回去”，在剑桥英语词典中，它有两个含义，一是对于别人的言行攻击做出报复，另一个是做出愤怒的回应。

Bite back 对言语攻击进行反击、愤怒地回应

例：Rather than bite back to rumors, people often find the right time to clarify

对于谣言，人们往往不会愤怒地回应，而是找准时机澄清。

五、Bite your lip 不只是“咬嘴唇”

Lip [lɪp] 嘴唇说到咬嘴唇，大家第一反应就是“bite your lip”，除了这个，它还有更地道的意思。

Bite your lip 一言不发

牛津英语词典这么解释：

To stop yourself from saying something or from showing an emotion.

想象一下，把嘴唇咬住，要说话、表达情感就比较难了。因此也不难得出“一言不发、欲言又止”等含义。

例：The police asked 3 questions in a row, but he bit his lip.警察连续问了3个问题，但他都一言不发。

六、与bite相关的短语：

bite one's nails → 束手无策

bite one's tongue → 忍住不说（会对别人造成伤害的话）

bites the hand that feeds → 恩将仇报

bite one's head off → （无缘无故的）把某人骂得狗血淋头
