The primary reason was the ability to use insurance for reimbursement, making it financially practical. Additionally, as a medical student, she was already familiar with the hospital's system and processes, which likely made the experience less daunting.
She faced significant difficulty in securing an appointment, as she had to compete with others on the hospital's app to book a slot. Despite being a medical student, she had no special privileges and often found herself unable to get an appointment, even after seeking help from colleagues.
During her acupuncture session, she experienced a sudden low blood sugar episode, leading to a loss of consciousness. The medical staff quickly responded by giving her honey water and bread. This incident made her realize the severity of her cervical spine condition, which was later confirmed by imaging.
Her colleagues were supportive but also practical. One of her seniors even asked her to write her own medical records while she was hospitalized, which she found frustrating. Despite her condition, she was still expected to fulfill her duties as a medical student, highlighting the demanding nature of medical training.
She underwent general anesthesia for her cervical spine surgery and described the experience as simply falling asleep and waking up without any significant issues. She did not experience any unusual behavior or confusion upon waking, which is sometimes reported by patients after anesthesia.
She returned to work earlier than the recommended one-month rest period due to concerns about falling behind in her medical training. There were rumors that taking a full month off could result in being held back a year, which motivated her to resume her duties despite her condition.
She noted that during her hospitalization, she spent more time with fellow patients and caregivers than with doctors or nurses. This experience gave her a new appreciation for the role of caregivers and the friendships that can develop between patients and those who assist them during their hospital stay.
She observed that many doctors and medical students avoid seeking treatment at their own hospital due to concerns about privacy and the stigma associated with being a patient. This reluctance is often driven by the fear of colleagues knowing about their medical conditions.
