Saga was inspired by his own frustration with reading untranslated manga. He often used Google Translate, which separated the text from the speech bubbles, making the experience less enjoyable. This pain point led him to develop a tool that could translate manga while keeping the text within the original speech bubbles.
Saga used GPT-3.5 and Cloud as his 'cyber employees' to help develop the core translation software. He wrote around 200,000 words of requirement documents to guide the AI in creating the necessary models and training data, which eventually led to the development of the product.
AI Manga Translator is currently ranked third globally in the manga translation category, with Google Translate being the first. The product has achieved a consistent monthly growth rate of 200% since its launch in May.
One of the main challenges was ensuring that the translated text fit within the original speech bubbles without disrupting the artwork. Saga also had to deal with the limitations of early AI models like GPT-3.5, which required extensive documentation and iterative testing to achieve the desired results.
AI Manga Translator supports multiple languages and fonts, but faces challenges with certain artistic fonts and languages that read from right to left, like Arabic. The tool adjusts the text size and layout to fit within the speech bubbles, though some languages require additional processing, such as mirroring the text for Arabic.
Saga actively seeks user feedback through email and Discord, and uses it to continuously improve the product. He emphasizes the importance of releasing early versions of the product to gather feedback, even if they are not perfect, and iterating based on user input.
Saga used a combination of SEO optimization, social media posts on Twitter and Reddit, and writing blog articles to attract users. He focused on creating content that addressed user needs, such as tutorials and comparisons with other translation tools, which helped drive organic traffic and growth.
Saga initially priced the service at $1.99 for 100 translations, significantly lower than competitors. He later introduced subscription plans, including a $30 monthly plan for 3,000 translations and a $999 annual plan for unlimited translations. The pricing strategy was adjusted based on user feedback and market demand.
AI Manga Translator serves as a tool for manga translation groups, helping them reduce their workload. Some groups use the tool to quickly translate manga, then refine the translations manually using tools like Photoshop. Saga is also exploring the development of a custom client to better serve these groups.
Saga plans to continue improving AI Manga Translator, including developing a Chrome plugin and enhancing translation quality. He also has ideas for other projects, such as a tool that helps gamers find in-game strategies by analyzing their screen, inspired by his love for gaming and manga.
