The word superfood gets thrown around a lot these days in the health optimization space. However, I'm going to share with you two superfoods that truly are superfoods to boost hormonal health and improve overall energy and vitality. And that is pomegranate extract and cacao extract. What I'm gonna do is look at how these two superfoods can support testosterone optimization in humans.
So the study that I'm referring to here was titled a proprietary herbal blend containing extracts of Punica granatum
fruit rind and theobroma cacao seeds increases serum testosterone level in healthy young males, a randomized double-blind placebo controlled study. Now this study was released in 2023 and the article discusses the findings of a study that was published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, which investigated the effects of a cacao and pomegranate extract blend
on testosterone levels in healthy men. Now, this study involved 42 men between the ages of 18 and 35 who were randomly assigned to either a placebo group or a group that received the cacao and pomegranate extract blend for four weeks. Now, the results of the study showed that the group that received the cacao and pomegranate extract blend had a significant increase in testosterone levels compared to the placebo group.
Specifically, the group that received the extract blend saw an increase in both total testosterone levels and free testosterone levels. The authors of the study suggest that the cacao and pomegranate extract blend may have potential as natural alternative to testosterone replacement therapy for men with low testosterone. So ultimately, what can we gather from this research? Well,
Both pomegranate and cacao extracts possess many other health benefits, not just for testosterone optimization. However, if we were to try and build out a testosterone optimization smoothie, for example, these two ingredients would be favorable to support healthy hormonal production.
So this study here was looking at 21 to 35-year-olds and the primary outcome showed that this particular herbal blend, Tesnor, had improved the serum testosterone level free and total of the active group compared with placebo with secondary outcomes of increased hormones such as DHT, estradiol, luteinizing hormone, cortisol,
hand grip strength and mid upper body circumference or mid upper body circumference. And what they noted was that Tesnor significantly increased free testosterone level in healthy young males. You can see the dosages that they used here was 200 milligrams and 400 milligrams of this proprietary herbal blend.
Now, in addition, Tesnor reduces aging male symptoms scores and improves testosterone levels in aging males as well between the ages of 36 to 55 year olds in a second randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial. And now this study had 131 males aged between 36 and 55. And what they noted was that there was an improvement in testosterone levels and increased
a reduction in aging related symptoms. Now, you're probably wondering whether or not rat studies mean anything. And this is another reason why, you know, a number of healthcare practitioners, including myself get shamed upon for drawing upon
that rat studies and a number of times these doctors will say, this rat study will not translate to humans. However, what I wanna do is just outline that rat studies and animal studies can be a starting point for human studies. And so what this study here was looking at was the serum testosterone level in Sprague-Dawley rats.
And that they found that the synergistic blend of these two herbal extracts increased cellular production of testosterone and inhibits the aromatase activity in vitro and increases in serum testosterone level by 45% in 14 days and improves semen quality compared with control in these rats. So we can see that, you know, we can look at rat studies as
An idea gives us a potential justification for the utilization of some of these herbs and botanicals. And so we must not disqualify all rat studies when we're looking at herbal medicine research and supplemental research. So if you did want to combine cacao and pomegranate,
I did come up with a basic stack and that is by using chocamine, which is a standardized version of cacao and then also pomela, which is a standardized version of pomegranate extract. So we're looking at a dosage of a thousand milligrams of chocamine and 150 milligrams of pomela per day.
Both of these herbs or these superfoods can be found in the description down below if you wanted to actually add these to your smoothies. Sometimes I just dump these powders in some water and I'll shot it back before a workout or even just before filming videos or jumping onto a podcast. So these two superfoods have many other health benefits outside of hormonal health. So
The concluding remarks of this particular study was that it's definitely exciting research. We do need further longer-term studies in a bigger sample size. We need more participants in the study next time. But it is exciting to see that yet again, we're seeing beneficial effects from pomegranate extract and cacao extracts.
