Hi friends. You might notice something a little different about this episode. That's because it's part of the moment of calm. You'll hear different theme music that is quieter and calmer. That makes these episodes great for winding down before bedtime or when you just need a few minutes to relax. Thanks for listening. From the brains behind Brains On, this is the Moment of Um. Moment of Um comes to you from APM Studios. I'm Nico Gonzalez-Whistler.
Last week, we had our annual Brains on Universe slumber party extravaganza, and Gungador accused me of waking him up with my sleep talking. Can you even believe it? I couldn't either. That's why I downloaded this handy-dandy app that records you while you're sleeping. And my recording from last night just finished processing. Aha! Hear that? Absolutely no sleep to...
Okay, enough of that. So, seems Gungador was telling the truth after all. Must apologize to him later. And also return the unicorn print fleece Blankie I borrowed from him.
But first, why do some of us talk in our sleep? Hi, I'm Lila. Hi, I'm Aria. We're from Wisconsin. And our question is, why do people talk in their sleep? So the reason that we talk in our sleep and sleep talking, if you want to be really smart, is called a somniloquy.
My name's Chris Winter and I'm a neurologist or brain doctor and sleep specialist. In deeper stages of sleep, we're still able to move and in some cases talk. That's where sleepwalking comes in. If somebody goes to bed and they wake up on the couch in their living room,
They did something called sleepwalking, and that's called somnambulism. So sleep talking, we consider to be to some degree normal, meaning it's okay if you sleep talk. It's often hereditary. So if you sleep talk a lot, chances are mom or dad probably slept talk a lot too. But if it's loud,
and it's constant, it might be an indication that something's disrupting your sleep. Like you're having a little bit of acid reflux or you're having a little breathing disturbance or a little bit of restlessness in your legs. Or you sleep with your dog and your dog's waking you up. There's something disturbing your sleep. And when that disturbance wakes you up, some people tend to talk.
So chances are it's fine, but if it's really loud and it's bothering your family, you can always talk to a sleep specialist to find out more about it and if there's something you can do to slow it down or stop it. Hmm. Actually, you know, I do remember hearing my mom sleep talk one time when we went on a family camping trip. She seemed really intent on knitting mittens for a dolphin. Anyway, seems like my sleep talking is normal and maybe I got it from her.
Actually, it says here on my app that up to 66% of people have talked in their sleep. That's two out of every three people. Okay, let me just grab this blankie. Time to go find my buddy Gunganore.
